A Renewed Mind

Romans 12:2 NIV
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

In his letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul reminds us what God’s will is for our lives. God doesn’t want to see His children in lack, in family conflicts or under emotional or spiritual oppression. He longs for us to experience the fullness of His promises, which is why we need to understand that His will for us is good, pleasing and perfect. The only one way to live the fullness of His will is by renewing our mind. God longs to transform our thoughts and understanding so that we can live in constant victory and conquer what He has promised us.

LET’S GO DEEPER

1. ALLOW GOD TO EXAMINE OUR MIND

Psalms 139:23-24
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

It’s necessary to be constantly examining our life, especially our thoughts. That’s why the Psalmist David expresses to God, “Search me and try me, to see if there is any wicked way in me”.
The Word says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7a).

This means that every thought we allow and accept, leads us to act, make decisions and react a certain way. Our thoughts directly affect our actions and our behavior.

Because of this, every day we need to put on the armor of the warrior we find described in Ephesians 6:13-17. We must make special use of the first spiritual weapon of defense towards our thoughts which is the belt of truth. When you cover your mind with this belt, you make all power of darkness that wants to govern your mind back off and then you can experience freedom.

2. SUBMIT OUR THOUGHTS TO JESUS

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NIV
“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

Did you know that behind a thought there is a spiritual personality? The mind of the human being is a battlefield where thoughts of good or evil land. The enemy knows that when he manages to gain ground in a person’s mind, he can dominate and bend their will. That is why what the Word says is so important: that we must take authority and renounce to every thought contrary to the knowledge of God. We cannot accept the lies and deceit of the adversary when he wants to sow in our mind seeds of doubt, unbelief, fear, failure, defeat, inferiority, etc. because by accepting them, they become strongholds that bind, oppress and lead to destruction.

On the contrary, when our thoughts are of faith, love, hope and kindness it means our mind is being controlled by the Holy Spirit and therefore is subject to obedience to Jesus.

3. FILL OUR MIND WITH WHAT’S RIGHT

Philippians 4:8
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

How can we renew our mind? How can we renew ourselves in our understanding? The only way is when we spend time in the Word. When we hear the voice of God, He guides every area of our lives, including what we think. Apostle Paul gives his opinion regarding what a child of God must meditate on daily: everything that is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and everything that is of good report and praiseworthy. How many times has our first thought in the morning been one of anguish, despair, doubt, sadness, complaint, or discouragement? Today we must ask for our mind to be transformed into the mind of Christ. This transformation only comes through hearing the Word of God because that is where we daily receive the faith to conquer.

It’s time to have the mind of a conqueror! It’s time for us to go outside the walls of the church and conquer the fields of influence in our society: the arts, politics, law, audiovisual media, etc. It’s never too late to start preparing yourself and be excellent in the talents God put in you!

PRAYER

Read Ephesians 6:13-17 out loud. Ask a few of your cell group members to share what they understand about these verses. Explain that they must gird their thoughts with the belt of truth, so that every one of the enemy’s lies will leave their minds.

Teach them to apply the blood of the Lamb of God who was slain. His blood is the one that destroys the spirit of Bar-Jesus [full of all deceit, full of all evil, son of the devil (disobedience and rebellion) and enemy of all righteousness] that has twisted God’s plans.

Visualize the cross and declare Colossians 2:14-15: “Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it”.

Take every negative thought of failure, inferiority, defeat, death, sickness, etc. captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ and destroy those arguments at the cross.

Have a time of worship, preferably with a song of gratitude and that speaks of the power that is in the blood of Jesus. Through your praise and worship, God will transform the mind of your disciples and change the spiritual atmosphere around. Amen.
